What do you need to arrange?

The birth of your baby is a special time, but there are also practical matters to take care of. These include registering the birth, establishing parental responsibility, and registering your baby with a health insurance provider. This checklist will help you make sure everything is taken care of on time, so you can fully enjoy those first precious weeks with your baby

Birth registration
The birth of your baby must be registered within 3 working days of the birth. Nowadays, this can easily be done online.

A baby's birth must be reported to the municipality. This must be done in the municipality where the baby was born.
So, babies born at Máxima Medisch Centrum in Veldhoven must be registered with the municipality of Veldhoven. The municipality of Veldhoven will then make sure that the baby is registered in their place of residence.

The birth is usually registered by the father, but it may also be done by someone else who was present at the birth.
  • The birth must be registered within 3 days of your baby's birth.
This may be postponed by a maximum of 1 day if:
  • The third day falls on a weekend or a public holiday.
  • Two of the three days fall on a weekend or a public holiday.

What do you need to register your baby's birth online?

  • A DigiD
  • A signed birth declaration from your midwife or doctor
  • Acknowledgement of parentage certificate, if you are not married to each other or do not have a registered partnership

Birth registration
  • Municipality of Veldhoven
  • Municipality of Valkenswaard
  • Municipality of Geldrop
  • Municipality of Waalre is not yet available online

If you prefer to register your baby's birth in person, that is of course also possible. You will need to make an appointment first with the municipality where your baby was born.

Parental responsibility
Parental responsibility is the right and duty of a parent to raise and care for a child. If you have parental responsibility, you are also your child's legal representative.
If you are married, both the mother and father automatically have joint parental responsibility.
If you are not married, only the mother has parental responsibility. If, as an unmarried or unregistered partner, you have arranged for the child to be legally acknowledged, you will automatically have joint parental responsibility.

Health insurance
The government requires parents to register their child with a health insurance provider within 4 months of the birth at the latest. Once registered, your baby is insured retroactively from the date of birth for any healthcare costs that may already have been incurred after the birth, as well as for future healthcare costs. Register your baby with the parent who has the most comprehensive coverage. Your child is covered free of charge under the health insurance policy until the age of 18. To register your child, you will need their citizen service number (BSN). You will receive this within 4 weeks after registering the birth.
