During the preconception consultation:- You can ask any questions you may have.
- You will receive advice on how to increase your chances of becoming pregnant: for example, how often you have your period and when you are likely to ovulate.
- You will learn what you and your partner can do to give your baby the best possible start. This information is important, as many recommendations already apply before pregnancy.
- You will receive advice on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, for example about healthy nutrition, increasing physical activity, quitting smoking, and taking folic acid.
- We will measure your blood pressure, so that it can be compared with your blood pressure later in pregnancy.
- We will assess your personal and family risk factors, for example related to your health, exposure to harmful substances at work, or hereditary conditions in your family. We will also discuss whether any vaccinations are recommended before pregnancy, and what risks or points of attention may apply based on previous pregnancies or births.
- You will receive information about the process, for example when to take a pregnancy test and when to contact us after a positive pregnancy test.
- Additional support can also be offered if needed, for example in case of financial difficulties, psychological concerns, limited social support, or a language barrier.
Sometimes you may be referred to a gynaecologist. This may be necessary if you have a medical history that could affect a pregnancy. For example, if there is a hereditary condition in your family or if you have a chronic illness. It can also be helpful to make a plan with a gynaecologist before pregnancy if you experienced complications during a previous pregnancy or birth.
