Viability Scan
A viability scan is usually performed between 7 and 9 weeks of pregnancy. The purpose of this scan is to confirm that the pregnancy is developing normally and is located in the correct place within the uterus. This is usually a transvaginal (internal) ultrasound scan, as the baby is often still too small to be seen clearly through the abdomen.
It is reassuring to know that a normal viability scan is a very positive sign. However, it does not provide a guarantee that the pregnancy will continue without complications.
Dating Scan
A dating scan is usually performed between 10 and 12 weeks of pregnancy and is used to determine the gestational age of the baby. Based on the measurements taken during this scan, your estimated due date is established. This scan can usually be performed externally through the abdomen.

Fetal Anomaly Scan (SEO) (13-week and 20-week scans)
At 13 and 20 weeks of pregnancy, you will be offered the opportunity to have a screening ultrasound. These scans are designed to detect possible congenital abnormalities in your baby. During the examination, the sonographer assesses the development of your baby's organs, growth, and the amount of amniotic fluid. These scans are a reliable method for identifying many congenital abnormalities. However, not all conditions can be detected by ultrasound, and therefore these examinations cannot guarantee that the baby is completely healthy. If a possible abnormality is suspected, you will be referred to a Prenatal Diagnostic Centre for further evaluation. Depending on the nature of the finding, this may be at the Maastricht UMC+ (MUMC+) or the Máxima Medical Center (MMC).

If you would like to know your baby's gender, it can usually be determined during the 20-week ultrasound scan. However, there is always a chance that your baby may not be in a position that allows the gender to be seen clearly. Gender determination is **not performed during the 13-week scan.
  • 13-Week Ultrasound Scan: Performed between 12+3 weeks and 14+3 weeks of pregnancy.
  • 20-Week Ultrasound Scan: Performed between 18+0 weeks and 21+0 weeks of pregnancy, preferably between 19 +0 weeks and 20+0 weeks of pregnancy.

Growth Scans
Growth scans are performed when medically indicated. If, during a routine abdominal examination, we suspect that your baby may not be growing as expected or appears to be larger than average, we may assess your baby's growth with an ultrasound scan.
A growth scan may also be recommended if you previously gave birth to a baby with a low birth weight. In a subsequent pregnancy, this can be a reason to monitor your baby's growth more closely through additional ultrasound examinations.

Presentation Scan (to determine your baby’s position)
Around 34–35 weeks of pregnancy, an ultrasound scan is often performed to assess both your baby’s position and growth.
