Contraception method

Which contraception method suits you best depends on several factors. For example, whether you are breastfeeding, want to become pregnant again soon, or no longer wish to have children; your situation will influence your choice of contraceptive method. We are happy to provide more information about this.

If you are under 16 years old, parental consent is required.

For more information, see: [Contraception – the Midwife (KNOV)] and [Home – Contraception].

Implanon
Implanon NXT is a contraceptive implant that can be placed in the upper arm. The implant contains the hormone etonogestrel, a progestogen. Each day, the implant releases a very small amount of the hormone into your body. This amount is sufficient to prevent ovulation. When you wish, or after three years, Implanon NXT can be removed by us. After removal, fertility returns quickly.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us!
The implant
The implant is about the size of a matchstick: 4 cm long and 2 mm wide. We place the Implanon NXT in your upper arm, just under the skin. You can only feel the implant if you run your finger over it.
How it works
Implanon NXT works as follows:
Each day, the implant releases a very small amount of the progestogen etonogestrel into your body. The hormone acts as a sort of “interrupter” for a gland in your brain. The signal that this gland sends to your ovaries each month does not get through, which means no egg is released. As a result, fertilization cannot occur, and pregnancy is prevented.

Additionally, the hormone thickens the cervical mucus, making it very difficult for sperm to pass through—providing an extra layer of protection.

Placement
At Vivre, you can have the Implanon implant placed. This is a simple and quick procedure. First, your upper arm is numbed with a local anesthetic. The implant is then inserted just under the skin using a small needle. After placement, a pressure bandage is applied to your arm, which you can remove yourself after 24 hours. A bruise may form at the site, but this usually disappears quickly.

Timing of placement
If you have recently given birth, the implant can be placed immediately and provides immediate protection against pregnancy. It does not affect breastfeeding.

If placement occurs more than 21 days after delivery, it is recommended to use a condom for 7 days. If you have already had sexual intercourse, it is important to be certain you are not pregnant, which can also be ensured by waiting for your first postpartum menstruation.

Removal
You can stop using Implanon NXT at any time. The upper arm is locally numbed, and a small incision (about the size of a pinhead) is made. One end of the implant is exposed and removed. A plaster and pressure bandage are applied. The entire procedure usually takes only a few minutes. The pressure bandage can be removed after 24 hours. A bruise may appear at the site, which is not serious and usually disappears quickly. Sometimes a small, thin scar remains.
Advantages and disadvantages
Advantages:

The average hormone release is low: only 60–70 micrograms per day. After three years, the release decreases further to just 25–30 micrograms per day.
Very safe and reliable—you cannot forget it or lose it.
Menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea), often accompanied by nausea, diarrhea, or headaches, are often reduced.
Can be used while breastfeeding.
Can be placed immediately after childbirth.
Many women experience reduced menstrual bleeding, and some stop bleeding entirely.
Fertility returns quickly after removal.

Disadvantages:
Menstrual periods cannot be planned.
During the first three months, your body may need to adjust, and irregular bleeding or spotting can occur.
Some women experience bothersome side effects.
Does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Possible side effects
All contraceptive methods can have side effects. The potential side effects of Implanon NXT are similar to those of other hormonal contraceptives that do not contain estrogen.
Your body may need time to adjust to the hormones. In the first few months, some women may experience headaches, acne, tender or painful breasts, weight gain, or vaginal infections. Overall, the implant is well tolerated by most women.

IUD

If you want or are considering an IUD, you can also come to our practice. Even if you are not yet registered with us (for example, if you have never been pregnant), you can have an IUD placed here.

An IUD is a very reliable form of contraception and is also a good option during breastfeeding. If you take medication or have issues with your menstrual cycle (e.g., PCOS, endometriosis), always consult your treating physician first.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us!
